Jorge Perez
New Haven Works Chair and Connecticut Banking Commissioner
Jorge L. Perez is the Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Banking, appointed in 2015 and reappointed in 2019. In this capacity, he oversees the regulation of state-chartered banks, credit unions, consumer credit, and securities.
A native of Cuba, Mr. Perez grew up in New York and later in New Haven. He earned an accounting degree from the University of New Haven, building a 25-year career in the banking sector before his state appointment.
Prior to moving to state government, Mr. Perez long served as an elected leader in New Haven's local politics for nearly three decades. He served as a member of the Board of Alders, representing the 5th Ward, and notably served two terms as the President of the New Haven Board of Alders (2000–2006 and 2012–2015). His financial expertise was utilized through his decade-long service on the Finance Committee, including eight years as its chair. Additionally, he chaired the Board's Black and Hispanic Caucus from 2006 to 2011 and championed significant local initiatives like the Fire Cadet Program and the Community Benefits legislation. After stepping down from the board of alders, Jorge Perez was honored at New Haven’s Black and Hispanic Caucus awards gala for his extensive public service.
Mr. Perez was instrumental in establishing New Haven Works, and he currently serves as its Chair of the Board of Directors. His extensive community involvement also includes serving on the boards of organizations, including New Haven’s Q-House, Habitat for Humanity, and the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority.
